Originally Macro was a Zoom overlay focused on productivity. It allowed users to type in action items, takeaways, etc. right in the call. Macro would then transfer all that information into a Google Doc and send it to attendees.

During the course of the pandemic the team realized that with more people meeting virtually, productivity wasn't the main problem to solve. With people spending more time than ever in Zoom meetings people started to feel less connected and drained by being on camera. So the team came together to think through how do we pivot and make this experience authentic and inclusive.

While breaking out of the Zoom grid and enabling users to apply shapes and filters to their window, we still had the opportunity to improve the other parts of the Zoom experience like chat. At the time Zoom only offered basic emojis.

One feature we introduced was GIFs to the chat feature to enhance non-verbal communications during meetings. This allowed people to express themselves in chat using a familiar form of text communication that made meeting chat more delightful.
